About Me

My Mission Statement

I am a Senior at the University of Olivet and am currently studying Media Production and Communication. I am also an athlete who competes in cross country and track. My mission is to become a photojournalist who uses his photographs to tell a story, make the viewer think, bring attention to important issues, and accurately depict what is going on in the world. As a student, I will work toward this by learning all I can about photojournalism and taking classes like Introduction to Media Studies that help me see what is happening worldwide. Currently, I am an intern with the University of Olivet's Sports Information Director, taking pictures of athletic events to be used on social media and the athletics website.

Comet Cooldown

I am one of three hosts for Comet Cooldown, which is a radio show that airs every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We discuss a variety of topics, ranging from relationship advice to pickup lines to brain rot. My job is to do research about sports events, game scores and Pop Culture for each episode.

Service Learning

The need that I identified was for pictures of campus events that weren’t staged. The scope was the campus of The University of Olivet. The purpose of this project was to provide pictures of campus events that the school could use for promotional purposes. My audience was the students, staff, and faculty at UO. The end goal was to have my pictures used by marketing in some way. I came up with the idea of taking pictures of campus events and then giving them to Joshua Gillespie (JG) for use by the marketing department. I reached out to JG and he said he would be ok with that. Finally, I started looking at the events calendar and seeing what events I could go to. In terms of specific MPC tools I used, I used my camera skills. I used the MPC skills I learned to decide what makes a good picture. I made sure that they had a clear subject and weren’t blurry.

For what was produced, I made a post on Raftr showing some pictures as a “highlight” of the first semester. JG told me that he and a few others in the marketing department were considering other ways to use my work, such as: pictures that are sent in the weekly email, as part of a collage of one of the walls in Cutler, and promotion for comet fest next year. My project was received well. JG was very appreciative of someone coming out and taking pictures that highlighted the many good things about UO. I was able to sharpen my photography, editing, and time management skills. I say this because I had to take quality pictures, make sure they looked clean in edits, and then find which events I could go to. A lesson I learned about  MPC work in real-world settings is that it requires a lot of time management. This project connects with my career goals because I want to be able to use my pictures to tell stories. JG told me that he wants my pictures to be able to tell a story and that aligned up perfectly with what I want to do with photography. If I had more time and resources, I would improve the project by going to more events. This experience changed my perspective on service and community engagement because I’ve never been able to use the skills that I’ve learned and want to apply to my future career to help others. One key lesson I’ll carry into future work is to manage my time more efficiently.
